Blues afficianados will welcome this rare gig featuring Top Topham, the original guitarist for the legendary 60's band The Yardbirds and US singer/guitarist John Idan (who joined Top in a reformed Yardbirds band in the 1990's and has been touring internationally ever since) backed by Ed Spevok on drums (who has played with Van Morrison, Cat Stevens and Jimmy Cliff amongst others) and Jim Mercer on bass (a veteran of the British blues scene).
Currently on tour in the UK, this is one gig not to miss.

Ray Owen Biog

Ray Owen, the original frontman of cult rock pioneers Juicy Lucy, is one of the unsung heroes of British rock history. A black boy, born in the UK in 1947 and adopted by white parents, embarked on his musical adventure by becoming the bass player for the legendary Misunderstood. Following an encounter with German police and machine guns, a jam session with Eric Clapton and Dick Heckstall Smith at the Staines Supershow and a solo single (a cover of Bob Dylan's Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You released on Fontana), the Misunderstood became Juicy Lucy with Ray on Vocals.

As the only band to ever have a hit with Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love (VO1 launching the Vertigo label, home to many top bands including Dire Straits, Metallica & Black Sabbath) and with one of the most vulgar album covers to date, they secured their importance in the rise of British blues rock. The band's founder, American born slide player Glenn Fernando Campbell, had a unique and unrivalled approach to the instrument, which led John peel to state, "Glenn is Jimmy Page & Jeff Beck rolled into one".
The band stomped through the year playing venues such as the Middle Earth, The UFO, The Roundhouse, The Albert Hall (alongside Chuck Berry, Johnny Winter, Traffic, T-Rex, Elton John and Fleetwood Mac), The Speakeasy, Klooks Kleek, Reading University and the Brighton Dome, reaching their peak with an appearance on Top Of The pops in March 1970 performing Who Do You Love, which incidentally was used for a Burger King advert around 1999.
In 1971 Polydor released Ray Owen's Moon, an album that would spawn a number 1 in the Belgian singles chart and was reviewed in November 2010 Classic Rock magazine as a lost nugget. Ray Owen's Moon had appearances at The Isle Of Wight Festival as well as The Festival Of The Midnight Sun in Scandinavia. During the flight Ray was seated next to Chuck Berry and upon arrival they shared a chillum under the stage!

The obscure talent that is Ray Owen also happened to be the first person to play at The Hard Rock Cafe in June 1971 on the opening day, was let into Bath Festival for free with his entourage as it was assumed he was Jimi Hendrix, hung out with Tommy Vance on the banks of the River Thames drinking Jack, jammed with Marc Bolan at his home studio, gave singing lessons to Chrissie Hynde ("in bed!"), and was taken for a ride by Jeff Beck in his Ferrari. Having owned an Austin Healey during his late teens whilst working at Charing Cross Hospital as an Orderly, which he saved up to buy before his transition to rock star, how could he resist?

Ray also fronted the late Vincent Crane's Atomic Rooster in the years up until his death, and had a brief spell with Killing Floor, who were poached from Ray to become Rory Gallagher's backing band.

Ray is now fronting his own incarnation of Juicy Lucy, having previously revived the band in 1995, recording an album and playing the Malvern Fringe Festival and the Bulldog Rally. Ray Owen's Juicy Lucy perform tracks from the recently remastered first album, the Moon album, as well as new material and unreleased compositions from the last 40 years.

To see Ray Owen live, the self-proclaimed native of planet Venusia, is to be teleported back to the innocence of the '60s British rock star, preserved intact, as if released from a time capsule.

CHRIS McCAUSLAND
Held in high esteem by the national media and recognisable from BBC’s Unrapped with Maranda Hart, BBC’s Me Too!, Comedy Central‘s most recent two series of The Comedy Store, and ITV’s Stand-up Hero – award-winning comedian Chris McCausland performs both nationally at all of the country’s major comedy clubs, and internationally as far afield as Asia and the Middle East.

Last year he was awarded the Cultural Diversity Award for comedy by Channel Four, The BBC and Sky TV and subsequently performed at the Royal Opera House to all of the countries major broadcasters. His 2010 Edinburgh show was a huge success and has led to a number of his ideas being in development with broadcasters.

Chris is the only professional comedian in the UK and probably even the world who is blind. This only serves to make his particular brand of observational comedy all the more unique as he chooses to talk about his disability only moderately; instead, priding himself on the variety and originality of his material.

WYND is a mainly women band from Brighton. Most of the material played is original, written by band leader Wiccapedia. WYND formed three years ago and has played all over Sussex and Surrey. Due to some real interest in WYND from the industry, this winter the band plans to start recording our first album. WYND's ethos is about development and mutual support in growing as musicians, and creating a fun and entertaining performance. There is a very wide range of experience in the band. WYND comprises Wiccapedia: rythymn guitar, vocals, 5 string violin; Aldo Honary Woman: electric guitars, backing vocals; Joogum: bass; AnnBowlynn: violin, mandolin, hand percussion; Andy'The Gambler': drums, cajon, percussion.
Our styles include folk, prog rock, heavy rock,latin,rock n roll, and other styles. Covers include songs by Joan Baez, Tom Petty, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Pat Benatar, Christy Moore and The Travelling Wilburys.

We've recently introduced a new semi-automated mailing system to handle our weekly What's On mailings. Its main benefits are that it's more informative, has pictures and is easier for us to manage. Inevitably, we had a few teething problems with the first mailing, but it seems to be working well now.
If you click on the pictures you'll see the full size versions and if you click on the event titles you'll be taken to the web site to see the full event details. For those of you who can't view graphics in your emails there's even a link at the top of each email which you can click to view it in your browser.
We're also working hard to optimise our mailing list, correcting typos, weeding out duplicates, deleting non-existent addresses and so on. Every email contains a link to unsubscribe from our list, so if you don't want to recieve any more mailings from us, just click that link and you won't be bothered again. And if you do that but change your mind (as we hope you would), you can always re-subscribe using the simple facility on the web site's home page.

This autumn they are launching a public campaign, 'Ask for Evidence', to bring about wider, more lasting change. When people come across dubious scientific claims, they want someone to go to with their questions. The campaign will encourage everyone to take up claims they think are misleading, both by reporting dodgy science claims and by getting involved in tackling claims themselves, to help stop the spread of misinformation in public discussion.

After a delightful return to the Con Club in October (comics always comment on what a fun and funny crowd there is at the Con Club), with all three acts proving to be a hit, it's time to press on into the Autumn, with a killer line up: Rainer Hersch is probably best known for his worldwide smash hit show, All Classical Music Explained, and we are very lucky indeed to have him opening in November. To continue the international feel, Fredrik Andersson gives us his Swedes eye view of the world, before the home grown household name and face of Live at The Apollo and many panel shows, Adam Bloom tops it all off with his full tilt hilarity. All expertly mc'd by the debonair, newly beard wearing Californian that is Neil Masters.
The acts might be from all over, but the locals are taken care of, don't worry. Any Bonfire Society Badge wearers get a POUND OFF the entrance fee, and Harvey's best is on at 2 70 a pint, and old at 2 85! Not bad eh?

Fredrik Andersson is better known on the Swedish Comedy club circuit and writing & performing comedy for TV such as the Swedish version of Balls of Steel.
Since last October Fredrik has been living amongst us in London and plans to be as successful on the British comedy scene as he is in Sweden. Since arriving he has debuted at all the major London clubs, featured in the Edinburgh Fringe show ‘The Stockholm Syndrome’ and recently performed at the Leicester Comedy Festival.

Adam Bloom is one of Britain's most inventive and highly regarded comedians. He has performed sell-out solo shows at the ‘96, ’97, ’98, ’99, '01, '04 & '07 Edinburgh Festivals as well as performing a sell-out tour of Britain. He has also sold out theatres at festivals in Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, Wellington & Cape Town as well as making three visits to ‘Just For Laughs’ in Montreal. In 2004, Adam was part of the 'Just For Laughs Comedy Tour', playing to 42,000 people in 17 cities across Canada. He has also written three series of ‘The Problem with Adam Bloom’ for BBC Radio 4 ('03-'05).

Nicky Mitchell is a professionalguitarist singer and performer hailing from the South East. She has performed in America and all over Europe, with top names such as Dana Gillespie, Taka Boom, and Eugene 'Hideaway' Bridges. She has also appeared alongside top British comics such as Jo Brand, Jenny Eclair and Eric Page. Nicky is a highly accomplished guitarist specialising in Jazz and slide Blues and is a simplly astonishing singer. She is very well known in the South of England especially for her role as comedy host and compere of the Brighton festival award winning show. The Kroon Kat Lounge, which she fronted for nearly seven years.

The secret anarchy of science
The public view of the scientist is of a cool, logical and level-headed individual. As Dr Michael Brooks explains, the truth is often very different. Many of our most successful scientists have more in common with libertines than librarians. In this talk, Michael explores some of the greatest breakthroughs in science and reveals the extreme lengths some scientists have gone to in order to make their theories public. Falsification, fabrication and plagiarism hit the headlines but less obvious misconduct is so common it has been dubbed "normal misbehaviour". Sometimes fraud, suppression of evidence and unethical and even reckless behaviour is necessary to bring the best and most brilliant discoveries to the world's attention.
Dr Michael Brooks holds a PhD in quantum physics and is a consultant for New Scientist magazine. He has also written for The Guardian, The Independent, The Observer, The Times Higher Education Supplement, and Playboy. His first novel, Entanglement, was published in 2007. His first non-fiction book, an exploration of scientific anomalies entitled 13 Things That Don't Make Sense, was published in 2009. He has lectured at New York University, The American Museum of Natural History and Cambridge University.
As well as contributing to traditional outlets for science, such as BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme and Material World, Michael appeared in a regular live slot on George Lamb's BBC Radio 6 Music show entitled Weird Science which featured unusual stories from the world of science. He stood as a candidate in the 2010 General Election for the seat of Bosworth against incumbent Conservative MP David Tredinnick, who Brooks described as "a champion of pseudo-science and a hindrance to rational governance".

Irrational beliefs – such as the acceptance of the power of witchcraft – are pervasive across the African continent, and are not restricted only to peasants and the uneducated. In fact, nearly all of the educated African elite believe in the efficacy of witchcraft. It is hard to believe that given all the advancements in medicine and science in the last 500 years, most Ugandans (and indeed most Africans) today still attribute their misfortune and sickness to evil spirits and demons, courtesy of witchcraft. These beliefs benefit from the tacit support of mainstream religions (particularly the fast growing 'charismatic' forms of Christianity) which, while denouncing witchcraft as evil, fully endorse the view that it is efficacious. In their view witchcraft is seen as evidence of 'Satan' at work. Mainstream religions are also guilty of promoting a belief system that leads to:

Pastors conning thousands of believers by stage-managing fake miracles
Many HIV positive believers dying because they were abandoning ARVs based on unsubstantiated miracle testimonies
Making people believe that they have been bewitched or are victims of 'generational curses'

The lack of a rational voice in this public conversation about what are spiritual matters prompted a number of local rationalists to come together and form Freethought Kampala, a club that seeks to promote reason, logic, science and critical thinking in a highly superstitious society. We host monthly meetings, and have many of our views published in the mainstream newspapers to be read by tens of thousands of Ugandans. We also have a strong online presence via a blog and Facebook page.
As a founding member of Freethought Kampala, James will give you an insight into the experience of being a skeptic in a deeply superstitious society, including the fight against witchcraft in Uganda, the phenomenal rise of charismatic forms of Christianity in Uganda, and its impact on belief in the efficacy of witchcraft, the politicisation of Religion, Spirituality, and mass conformity, the rise of skepticism in Uganda, challenges for skepticism in Uganda and the way forward from here.

What's the talk about?
At various points, children believe in lots of things from Santa Claus to the tooth fairy. Fantasy is important and distinguishing fact from fantasy is an important filter that children must develop. A sound education, critical thinking and an understanding of science and nature help people distinguish fact from fantasy, but what if fantasy is promoted as fact by people in authority? Teachers, ordained ministers and people who flaunt their credentials as men or women of science have a responsibility towards children and their position can be very influential. Then, promotion of fantasy as fact, is no longer a harmless activity. It is a form of intellectual abuse of children. In this talk James will look at various creationist books and comics widely used by fundamental evangelical Christians as ‘teaching aids’ for their position of a belief in Biblical literalism and a belief in creation over evolution.
We cannot prevent the publication of creationist books and comics aimed at children. But as a community of scientists and science educators we can prevent the ideas been taken on board as 'factual' and we can help prevent the misconceptions taking hold. We can only do this, however, if we are proactive in teaching evolution at an earlier stage in schooling and we can only prevent it with robust examples from the vast weight of scientific evidence for evolution that currently exists.
James Williams lectures in Science Education at the University of Sussex. He has extensive experience in teaching and teacher education, working in a variety of state schools as a head of department, head of year and assistant headteacher. In teacher education he has directed the PGCE secondary provision at Sussex University and is currently leading its science education provision. He has written a number of textbooks, education books, articles and academic papers. His latest book is How Science Works: teaching and learning in the science classroom (Continuum Books). He has written numerous education articles for the TES as well as The Guardian, The Independent and The Daily Telegraph. He has made expert contributions to local and national news for the BBC, ITN and Teachers’ TV.

You can ask for a number of tickets to be reserved for you and they will be held on the door until 9 pm on the evening of the event. Members do not need to reserve tickets because our commitment is that members will always be admitted.
