Lewes Con Club

Coming up soon...

Hello Everyone,

Latest News from the Con Club

Lewes Ripple May 2020 Postponed

STOP PRESS

THE CON CLUB IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Government advice is that we should all avoid social activities, such as going to pubs, clubs and restaurants.

The Committee has therefore decided to close the Club with immediate effect. We will continue to follow official government advice and will post updates on our website and social media.

Where possible we will attempt to re-arrange gigs, so please do look at our What's On pages for specific gig details, but for ticket refunds please contact the seller.

NO RIPPLE THIS MAY

The Lewes Ripple team has spent the last 6 months preparing a town-wide event to take place between the 4th and 10th May 2020, in eleven different venues and involving over sixty performers.

The Con Club has been especially helpful and supportive, with four major gigs, including the 8th May VE Day celebration, scheduled to take place at the club.

Given the current medical emergency we now consider that it would be inappropriate to hold the event at this time. When the pandemic has run its course there will be a great need for people to come together again in large numbers and, at the first sign of daylight, the Ripple will be ready to roll.

THE EVENT IS POSTPONED, NOT CANCELLED.

Here are the next few events we're putting on at the club...

Friday 27th March 2020 - Jake Morrell - POSTPONED

JakeMorrell2020web

Postponed. This gig has been rescheduled for 24th September 2020, more details to follow

Modern Age Music is pleased to present: Jake Morrell

Jake Morrell could have come straight out of Nashville, or even from the Californian sunshine, as his music suggests; but Jake is from Norfolk, England!

Jake was ‘discovered’ by Dermot O’Leary, who featured him on his Radio 2 Show. One influential listener just so happened to be Glastonbury boss Emily Eavis, who immediately asked Jake to perform at the iconic festival.

Jake recorded his debut single with London based producer Brett Shaw (Florence & The Machine, The Kooks & Dry the River). The song entitled "Wire and Thorns" reached No.2 in the iTunes country charts on the first day of release.
This led to Jake being invited to perform at this year’s Country 2 Country festival, where he premiered his first major single, the appropriately titled ‘Englishman (Trying to Write a Country Song)’ – written with the Grammy-winning writer/producer Kipper.

The reaction to the song put Jake firmly in line as one of the country’s favourite new male artists in the genre. This lead to a string of both solo and band shows and festivals throughout the summer with Jake showing himself to be as irresistible as a solo act as he is with his band.

The most exciting new development, however, is the new music that Jake has now recorded to launch the next phase of his career. This is led by a joyous forthcoming single, ‘Home’, written and produced with Rolling Stones keyboardist, Matt Clifford. With an evocative mix of Mumford & Sons, Eagles and even Springsteen, ‘Home’ is the definitive track that firmly stamps Jake Morrell’s name across the UK country music scene. With a gig history that reads like a road atlas, Jake and the band have truly honed their craft and always leave you feeling joyous and wanting more!

Sunday 29th March 2020 - Sundays in the Bar - Mike Newsham CANCELLED

MNewsham2020web

We are very sorry but our March, April and May Sundays in the Bar gigs are cancelled

Originally from Yorkshire now based in Brighton, Mike has played all over the UK supporting the likes of Jesse Malin, Sam Roberts Band, Guillemots, Laura Veirs and Deadstring Brothers, amongst others. His Americana, folk and rock-tinged songs are well-crafted and his dynamic guitar work is described as so fluid and textured, and so goddamn fast but still so tidy ... a show in its self.Influenced by the likes of John McLaughlin, Neil Young and the Lemonheads, as well as fusing Ska and Punk stylings from the likes of Paul Simon, Toots and the Maytals and The Clash, Mike commands his varied styles with authority and class, mixing each and every one with ease to create an explosive and memorable live show.
For just one man and a guitar, Mike’s live shows are" like watching a young Ryan Adams on speed" playing as if it’s his last day on earth, wowing the crowd with a seamless blend of quiet brooding songs of longing, to manic moments of furious acoustic playing. His well crafted dynamic live show is a must-see for any acoustic fans, and Mike is doing it all with a fresh new touch on the “one man and a guitar” acoustic scene.

Postponed - this gig has been rescheduled for 22nd August 2020

Global Beats presents: A Ska & Reggae Fest featuring THE SKATALITES, FREEDUB PRESS, SAMSARA COLLECTIVE
Easy Skankin DJs, Caribbean food by IRMA’S KITCHEN

THE SKATALITES began performing in Jamaica in May 1964. The group was so hot that their first rehearsal became a show. So many people had lined up outside the venue, they decided to just charge admission and let everybody in! They were the top musicians on the island at the time, having come together after playing in different bands and on various recording sessions. These records were made to be played at the many competing sound systems around the island. The band became legendary, backing all the developing artists of the day, such as Toots and The Maytals, Prince Buster and “The Wailing Wailers” featuring Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. These groups were all recording on the new beat called ska, which had an infectious rhythm that was catching on like wildfire. Eventually, the beat slowed down into rocksteady, and then reggae. This wildfire spread unstoppably around the world, developing into a huge musical tree with many stylistic branches, including lovers rock, dub, dancehall/ ragga, ska-punk,, and others. Hugely popular groups, like The Police, The Clash, The Specials, The English Beat, Sublime and No Doubt, all have their roots firmly planted in the music of The Skatalites.

Since reforming after an almost 20 year hiatus in 1983, and beginning regular touring as a unit in 1989, they have not stopped thrilling audiences in every corner of the globe. Even after more than 50 years, and various lineup changes as members leave one stage for another, the band continues to perform and record new music in the inimitable Jamaican style, like only they can. The road has been long and hard, and sadly, seen most of the original members pass on. Often asked “when will you stop?” and “how do you keep doing it after all these years?”, the answer is simple: never – It’s the love of the music and the way our fans respond that keep us going Forward!

Featuring original vocalist Doreen Shaffer, along with the current lineup of outstanding musicians they have chosen to accompany them, the band proudly presents live the music of Jamaican Ska. Forever indebted to the inspiration and talent of: Roland Alphonso, Lloyd Brevett, Don Drummond, Jerome “Jah Jerry” Haynes, Lloyd Knibb, Tommy McCook, Donat “Jackie” Mittoo, John “Dizzy Johnny”Moore, and Lester Sterling, collectively known as The Skatalites.
